Build a strong foundation for school readiness.

This 9 Ways to Help Your Child Get Ready for School Activity gives families nine simple ways to support children’s learning and development while creating a colorful School Readiness Quilt together.

The activity includes nine “squares” of school readiness:

  • Experiences: Share everyday experiences and talk about what you see, do, and learn together.
  • Shared Reading: Read books together and talk about the stories.
  • Shared Writing: Write, draw, make lists, or create together.
  • Routines: Build simple daily routines your child can count on.
  • Time: Spend time talking, listening, playing, and enjoying each other.
  • Responsibilities: Let your child help with simple jobs at home.
  • Explanations: Answer questions and talk about how things work.
  • Curiosity: Encourage your child to ask questions and explore new ideas.
  • Imagination: Pretend, create, tell stories, and dream together.

Children can draw, color, or decorate each square as families explore the nine ideas. When complete, the quilt becomes a special keepsake that celebrates their journey toward school readiness.
